NCAA Preseason top 25 countdown: #24 Pittsburgh Panthers
24. PITTSBURGH PANTHERS
2016 record: 8-5 (5-3 in conference)
Pass yards per game: 221.7
Rush yards per game: 225.1
Points scored per game: 40.9
Points allowed per game: 35.6
At just about 41 ppg the Pitt panthers offense was one to be reckoned with in 2016 but on the other side of the spectrum, almost 36 ppg surrendered is awful. RB James Conner’s 1,092 rush yards and 20 total TDs along with QB Nathan Peterman’s 60.5 completion % and 27 TD passes led coach Pat Narduzzi’s team to 8 wins last season in the ACC.
With James Conner now in the NFL it will be interesting to see if that 225.1 rush yards per game will drastically decrease in 2017. WR Jester Weah will have to have to assume a bigger role and build on his 10 TD season from last year. Also if the defense can get the 35.6 points allowed per game down to about 25 they can compete in the ACC but only of that offense returns to 2016 form.
