Coach Geoff Collins and his Temple Owls football team suited up at Franklin field for an open practice. ScarecrowGrin.com was in attendance as the team continued to prepare for the 2017 season. The team is in transition after previous coach Matt Rhule moved on. With the departure of RB Jahad Thomas, Ryquell Armstead is set to be the teams lead back after running for 919 yards and 14 TDs In 2016.

The practice was a competitive one. The Temple defense looks to be as solid as its been in recent years. Safety Sean Chandler and his secondary secured the back end for most of the afternoon but The offense had a few bright spots. Wide out Freddie Johnson hauled in a one handed TD pass over some very good coverage.

Armstead didnt participate in much of the second half of the practice but he could be heard giving direction to the other running backs all throughout the session. It looks obvious that he is ready to take on a leadership role for the Owls. OT Leon Johnson was another vocal leader that could be heard getting his guys in the right positions and situations.

The QB position is still yet to be decided. We saw good plays by Todd Centeio and Anthony Russo but neither Quarterback has shown enough to separate himself from the other. The offense showed good tempo and once the starting QB is announced the team can focus on highlighting his skill set.

The teams first game is in 2 weeks vs Notre Dame and while there are things to clean up as a whole. The team looks focused and ready to go.

We at ScarecrowGrin.com would like the thank Coach Collins, Assitant AD Rich Burg and the Temple Owls for allowing us the opportunity to cover the team
