2017 NFL Preseason Outlooks: NEW YORK JETS

2017 NFL Preseason Outlooks: NEW YORK JETS

2016 record: 5-11 (2-4 in Division)

KEY ADDITIONS: CB Morris Claiborne

KEY DEPARTURES: Everybody, and yes. I mean everybody. WR Brandon Marshall, CB Darrelle Revis, QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, C Nick Mangold, T Ryan Clady, WR Eric Decker, LB Erin Henderson and LB David Harris.

The Jets in 2016 were one of the worst teams on both sides of the ball. The Jets ranked 30th in offense, scoring a mere 275 points (17.2 PG) on the entire season. Defensively, the Jets were no better allowing 409 points (25.6 PG) on the season finishing with a 28th ranked defense. Brandon Marshall who was coming off of a fantastic 2015 debut season was reduced to pedestrian numbers. In 15 games played Marshall was targeted 128 times, yet was only able to secure 59 receptions for 788 yards and measly 3 TD’s on the season. All the blame doesn’t fall solely on Marshall. The Jets QB situation was atrocious at best in 2016. Whether it was due to injury, bad play, bad luck or all of the above the Jets had no one that could move the ball with any competency.

Geno Smith (QBR 30.9), Bryce Petty (QBR 19.4) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (QBR 45.4) combined for 16 TD’s on the season to go along with 25 Interceptions and 11 Fumbles. The only bright side to take from the 2016 season was the two headed monster of Matt Forte and Bilal Powell who combined for 13 TD’s to go along with 2,186 yards from the line of scrimmage.

As bad as the Jets were in 2017 there is no doubt in my mind this team has unequivocally gotten worse. With the departure of their best offensive players Brandon Marshall,  Eric Decker, and Nick Mangold. On the defensive side, The Jets lose David Harris a 10 year veteran leader to the team. A player who has recorded over 100 combined tackles in 4 of his past 5 seasons. They also lose Darrelle Revis and Erin Henderson. Add all these losses of key players with the fact that the Bills, Patriots and Dolphins have all overloaded their rosters and the Jets are looking at a tough road ahead.

On the bright side of things, The Jets key addition this off-season was the addition of Morris Claiborne. Claiborne is going to get an opportunity to shine in New York and with all the key losses on defense, The Jets desperately need Claiborne to step in and be a productive leader immediately. Another great thing for the Jets is that fact that they have officially moved on from Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick was one of the worst Quarterbacks in the NFL in 2016. In 14 games played he threw for 2,710 yards 12 TD’s 17 Interceptions and 9 Fumbles. An official QB Rating of 45.4. Smartest move all season. The Jets only hope right now is that players like Matt Forte and Bilal Powell can stay healthy and carry this team to a couple of wins.
