2017 NFL Preseason Outlooks: NEW YORK GIANTS

2016 record: 11-5 ( 4-2 in division)

KEY DEPARTURES: WR Victor Cruz, RB Rashad Jennings, DT Johnathan Hankins

QB Eli Manning had a huge year with 4,027 yards passing and 26 TDs and star WR Odell Beckham Jr did what we’ve all come to expect (101 rec 1,367 yards and 10 TDs). But the story of the 2016 New York Giants starts and ends with the defensive unit. 2016 free agents Olivier Vernon, Janoris Jenkins and Damon Harrison along with 2016 draft pick Landon Collins took this defense from the bottom of the league all the way to the top.

In 9 of their 11 wins the defense held the opponent to 20 points or less. The defense carried the team, the offense on the other hand had offensive line issues which made it tough to get the running game going. The result of that was less points scored. The 11 wins put them in the playoffs and the defense had the unfortunate draw of red hot Aaron Rodgers and the Green bay Packers. Rodgers torched the Giants defense for yards and TDs on there way to a 38-13 win.

The Giants lack of a running game made last year harder than it should’ve been. Oddly enough they decided to add more passing threats, draftee Evan Engram and veteran Brandon Marshall should make the passing attack even more potent. There’s a few questions the Giants have to answer before they can make the run for the super bowl, 1st is the addition of D.J. Fluker enough to fix the O-line? and 2nd, is Paul Perkins an every down back that they can rely on?

With the additions to the offensive side of the ball the Giants have a real shot at dethroning division champ and rival Dallas Cowboys. They have a week 1 meeting scheduled so we look to see sparks early in the 2017 season.
