TNF: New England Patriots vs Kansas City Chiefs

Another banner raised in Foxboro is how we start the 2017 season. Coming off the greatest comeback in Superbowl history, Tom Brady and his New England Patriots minus Julian Edelman played host to Andy Reid and the Kansas city Chiefs minus Spencer Ware.

The first offensive play of the year was a busted coverage but Brady overshot a wide open Dwayne Allen. After that pass the Patriots marched down the field in 2:52 and scored on a 2 yard TD run by RB Mike Gillislie. On the Chiefs first drive of the season, rookie Kareem Hunt lost a fumble on the first play and his first career carry.

The Chiefs held the Patriots on a 4th and 1 so the Hunt fumble didn’t cost them. Then they went 90 yards on 12 plays and capped the drive with a Alex Smith TD pass to Demetrius Harris to even the score at 7-7.

The Patriots opened the 2nd quarter with a 25 yard field goal by Stephen Gostowski. A 2nd short yardage TD by Mike Gillislie gives the Patriots a 17-7 lead. Tyreek Hill lined up all over the field in the 2nd quarter. He made two huge 3rd Down catches for first downs and with 13 seconds remaining in the 1st half, Alex Smith threw a 3 yard TD to running back Kareem Hunt that cut the Patriots lead to 17-14.

the 3rd TD pass by Alex Smith went to Tyreek Hill from 75 yard out to give the Chiefs the 21-17 lead. Andy Reids defense seemed to figure something out in the 3rd quarter because they began to slow the Patriots offense but penalties kept Patriots drives alive. After Brandin Cooks drew a long Pass Interference, Mike Gillislie punched in his 3rd TD from 1 yard out to help New England retake the lead 24-21.

After a long pass from Tom Brady to Brandon Cooks the New England drive stalled at the 15 yard line. Bill Belichicks team settled for another Gostowski field goal that extended the lead to 27-21.

Alex Smith had an extraordinary opening night. Touchdown number 4 was a 78 yard pass to running back Kareem Hunt. The quick strike gave Kansas city the lead 28-24. To quote Al Michaels “A Star is born” in rookie RB Kareem Hunt. His 3rd TD was a 4 yard run that made the score 35-27 with 5:19 remaining in the game. On the first play of the Patriots next drive, a Justin Houston sack of Brady was a huge plus but All-pro Safety Eric Berry being carted off with an Achilles injury is a catastrophic loss.

Charcandrick West put the game away with 4 minutes remaining with a 21 yard TD run pushing to score to 42-27. After a few more KC sacks, a couple first downs and Kneel down plays this one is in the books.
