MNF (Doubleheader Game 1): MINNESOTA VIKINGS vs NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
MINNESOTA VIKINGS vs NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
By: Robert L. Porter Jr
Monday night football starts 2017 with a double header. Game one sees the Minnesota Vikings hosting former star running back Adrian Peterson and his new team the New Orleans Saints. This game takes place at the site of Superbowl 52.
The Saints first 2 plays were Adrian Peterson runs to get him into the game. Then they put together a good first drive that took up 6 minutes and 39 seconds but was capped off by a Will Lutz field goal giving the Saints a 3-0 lead. On the Vikings first drive Bradford to Diggs was the 3rd down connection, they hooked up on two 3rd downs to extend the drive. Their drive ended in a Kai Forbath field goal, 3-3. The 2 drives took up most of the quarter, we’re heading to the 2nd knotted at 3.
The quarter started with a Drew Brees incompletion then a Saints punt. An iffy roughing the passer call extended a Saints drive that ended in another Lutz field goal, Saints lead 6-3. Sam Bradford and Vikings flew down the field and cashed in on a 18 yard TD pass to Stefon Diggs given Minnesota the lead 10-6.
The Vikings received a Saints punt with 1:43 remaining before the half and Sam Bradford proceeded to move his offense down the field. They marched 95 yards and another Bradford to Diggs TD finished this one off as the Vikings take a 17-6 lead into halftime.
To start the 3rd, Minnesota picked up where they left off as they kept the pressure on the Saints defense. Latavius Murray’s first run as a Viking was a fumble but the offense recovered it. A drop by Dalvin Cook forces them to settle for 3 and a 19-6 lead.
After punts by both teams Brees and the Saints came out with points on the brain. A faster paced offense and quick hitting routes plus a long pass to Tommy Lee Lewis put the Saints inside the 10 yard line but the Vikings defense stiffed up and forced a field goal, 19-9 Vikings.
Surprise surprise, Minnesota is on the move again as the 4th quarter starts. Dalvin Cook breaks a nice run the Bradford finds Kyle Rudolph for another TD pass making the score 26-9. A reoccurring theme for the Saints, nice drive stalls inside the 10 yard line. Followed by another Will Lutz field goal making it 26-12 Vikings.
Another Forbath field goal from 45 yards out makes it 29-12. Brees finally found the end zone on a short TD pass the Coby Fleener making it 19-29. Cook closes the game with a few first downs and this one is over.
