SNF: ATLANTA FALCONS vs GREEN BAY PACKERS
ATLANTA FALCONS vs GREEN BAY PACKERS
By: Robert L. Porter Jr.
The Atlanta Falcons host the Green Bay Packers in a rematch of the NFC championship game. This game also opens the Falcons new stadium. Both teams are coming off of week 1 wins and looking to get the 2-0 start.
A phenomenal opening drive by the Falcons ended with a 1 yard TD run by Devonta Freeman, 7-0 Atlanta. After the explosive drive by Matt Ryan and his offense, Aaron Rodgers led a methodical 11 play drive of his own that ended with a Ty Montgomery rushing TD, we’re all knotted up at 7. But the Packers looks to have lost WR Jordy Nelson to a leg injury. After a punt by both teams, Atlanta closes the quarter with the ball and a 1st down.
Another stellar Matt Ryan drive is capped off by a Freeman run making it 14-7. After a Rodgers drive stalled the Falcons received a punt and started their next drive from the 9 yard line. The first play was a 35 yard scamper by RB Tevin Coleman then there was a nice pass to Julio Jones but a Clay Matthews sack forced a field goal by Matt Bryant giving Atlanta a 10 point cushion.
After another Packers punt the Falcons take the field with 2 minutes to make some more noise be for halftime. A quick 3 and out gets Rodgers that ball back with 1:09 remaining. A big play by Randall Cobb was called back on a Offensive Pass Interference by Martellus Bennett which really hurt Green bay because the next play was a Desmond Trufant interception of Aaron Rodgers. Now Atlanta has the ball already in Matt Bryant field goal range. A Matt Ryan scramble followed be a Mohammad Sanu catch puts the Falcons at the 7 yard line. A short pass to Austin Hooper then a TD pass to Coleman puts Atlanta up 24-7 headed into the intermission.
The Quarter starts with an Aaron Rodgers backwards pass that was scooped up and ran in by Desmond Trufant. This turned Into a route really quickly, 31-7 Atlanta. Mike McCarthy needed to stop the bleeding and Rodgers did his best to do so on the next drive. They kind of stabilized the ship with another Bryant field goal cutting the lead to 21. With that 21 point cushion the Falcons went into milk the clock mode. A 53 yard field goal pushed the lead back to 24, Falcons 34 – Packers 10.
With the game all but over, Aaron Rodgers still has the look of a man that wants to go down swinging. On a 4th and 7 Aaron Rodgers hit Davante Adams on a 33 yard TD pass, the 2pt conversion attempt was unsuccessful making it 34-16 Falcons. A punt gives the ball back to the Packers and after a quick drive, a shovel pass to Montgomery makes it an 11 point game.
Aaron Rodgers showed why he is one of the NFL elites, his never say die attitude made this one worth watching late even when the early indication was of a blow out. However, after a valiant effort at a comeback the Packers fall to the Atlanta Falcons for the 2nd time in their last 3 games.
