SAN FRANCISO 49ERS vs LOS ANGELES RAMS
By: Robert L. Porter Jr
Thursday Night Football heads to the bay area. Two first time head coaches square off as Kyle Shanahan and his 49ers play host to Sean McVay and his LA Rams. Todd Gurley and Carlos Hyde are 2 of the NFL’s top running backs.
The 49ers received the opening kickoff, QB Brian Hoyer tried an out route to WR Marquise Goodwin that was intercepted on the first play of the game. The very next play was a Todd Gurley TD run making it 7-0 Rams. The 49ers next possession was much better after an offsides penalty on 4th down kept the drive alive. The drive ended with a short TD run by Brian Hoyer. Jared Goff’s first full drive was also aided by a penalty extending it but with that aside, a very good possession ended with a TD pass to Todd Gurley making it 14-7. The 49ers drove down into Rams territory again but a fumble by Raheem Mostert brought the drive to screeching halt. After the turnover the Rams marched into the 49ers part of the field and are set for a field goal attempt as the quarter concludes.
Greg Zuerlein boots a 48 yard field goal to make it 17-7 to start the 2nd period. Brian Hoyer misses a wide open Pierre Garçon to start the next drive. They would ultimately punt but a Tavon Austin muff sets the 9ers up at the 12 yard line. That drive stalled quick and a Robbie Gould kick makes it 17-10 Rams.
A quick Rams 3 and out sends the ball back to San Fran. A huge 3rd down catch by Garcon puts San Francisco just inside the 30 yard line but they ended up settling for another field goal, 17-13. Another good Goff drive ended in another Gurley TD giving him 3 in the first half and giving his rams a 24-13 lead.
A long Jared Goff pass to Sammy Watkins sets up a red zone trip for the Rams to start the half, a 49ers stop of Gurley at the 1 leads to another Zuerlein field goal making it 27-13 Rams. A solid drive gives the 9ers a goal to go situation and 4 runs by Carlos Hyde ended with a TD and the Rams lead cut to 7 points. San Francisco just couldn’t stop the Rams as they fly down the field for another TD, this one to Watkins from Goff from 1 yard out pushing the score to 34-20 Rams. As the 3rd quarter draws to a close, a 50 yard pass from Hoyer to Goodwin sets San Fran up as we head to the 4th.
We have a full on shootout on our hands, Hoyer comes down the field and from the 1 yard line finds his TE Garrett Celek for the TD. Gould missed the PAT making it 34-26. A drive featuring Gurley get the Rams down inside the 10 yard line and Goff finds Watkins for another TD making it 41-26 Rams.
Another long Hoyer pass this time to Garcon sets up a TD pass to Trent Taylor making it 41-33. A fumble on the kickoff puts the 49ers in business. A catch by Goodwin puts them at the 3 yard line and they cash in on a 4th and goal run by Carlos Hyde, the 2 point attempt failed so its now 41-39 Rams. An onside kick recovered by the 49ers with 2:10 remaining gives them the ball at midfield. They couldn’t manufacture any offense and an Aaron Donald sack on 4th and 20 basically brings an end to this one.
