ARIZONA CARDINALS vs DALLAS COWBOYS
By: Robert L. Porter Jr.
The Arizona Cardinals who are coming off an underwhelming overtime win against the Colts welcome the Dallas Cowboys after their drubbing at the hands of the Denver Broncos. Both teams are looking for better performances and a 2-1 start to their season.
The Cardinals receive to opening kick off and march down the field and take a 7-0 lead on a Carson Palmer pass to Jaron Brown. A quick 3 & out by Dallas gives the ball back to Arizona. The 2nd Cardinal drive looked a lot like the first where the Cowboys couldn’t get them off the field on third down. With what looked like another Palmer to Brown TD was called back due to a holding penalty. In a very quick first quarter the Cardinals lead 7-0 but are knocking on the door for more points.
A stand by the Dallas defense to start the 2nd quarter forced a 36 yard field goal attempt by new Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson that was missed. The start for Ezekiel Elliott looked like an extension of his game vs the Broncos last week. A 30 yard run by Elliott looked to have the Cowboys in business but penalties and a Chandler Jones sack forced a punt. A quick Cardinals 3 & out and a good return by Ryan Switzer set the Cowboys up in Arizona territory. A nice pass to Noah Brown then a zone read from 10 yards out by Prescott made it 7-7 with 1:11 remaining. The Cardinals next possession went next to nowhere as we head to halftime.
The Cowboys offensive line began to impose its will on the Cardinals defense as Elliott starts to find holes and then a shallow cross by Dez Bryant ended in a Dallas TD Making it 14-7 Cowboys after a horrible start to the game. The Cardinals next possession ended with a punt and their offensive line is have a rough time slowing down Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence. A very good defensive sequence by The Cardinals forces a Cowboys punt. 2 quick big passes to Larry Fitzgerald makes it 14-14. A Cowboys punt pins Arizona deep and after 2 plays they have a 3rd & 1 as the 3rd quarter comes to a close.
More pressure by Lawrence forces the 4th & 1 punt, the Cowboys will start this possession on the 50 yard line looking to reclaim the lead. A scramble drill for Prescott saw him break contain and launch a 37 yard dart to Brice Butler to give Dallas the lead again at 21-14. On their next drive an acrobatic catch by Larry Fitzgerald on 3rd & 18 keeps a Cardinals alive as they look to tie this game up. A miss by Palmer to J.J. Nelson over top could’ve knotted this one up, instead a Brittan Golden drop forces Arizona to kick a 37 yard field goal making the score 21-17.
With 6:35 to go, the Cowboys come out looking to salt this one away. With that said, The first play of the drive is a Play action role out by Prescott and he finds Brice Butler for a 53 yard pass setting his team up to close this one out. Ezekiel Elliott finishes this drive with an 8 yard TD run making it 28-17 with 4:57 remaining in the game. Another punt by Arizona basically put this one to bed. The Cowboys handed the ball off to Elliott with hopes of draining the clock but a quick punt gives the Cardinals the ball back with 2:57 remaining. Cowboys penalties aided the Cardinals drive but they ultimately turned the ball over on downs. A Prescott kneel put a bow on this game.
