SNF: DENVER BRONCOS vs NEW YORK GIANTS
DENVER BRONCOS vs NEW YORK GIANTS
By: Robert L. Porter Jr.
The Denver Broncos are coming off the bye to host the beat up and winless Giants. New York comes into this game down four wide outs, with a bad offensive line and a nonexistent running game which means this should be a cake walk for Von Miller and his defense but let’s not count 2-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning out.
Denver receives the opening kickoff, a CJ Anderson run, a Demaryius Thomas completion then a Thomas incompletion forces the quick 3 & out. The Giants first drive under new play caller Mike Sullivan went very well as Evan Engram was the focal point with 3 targets, the possession would end with a field goal making it 3-0 but they moved the ball well to start this game. A strip sack by JPP on Trevor Siemian that was recovered by Siemian is the highlight of another Broncos 3 & out. Manning can’t get much going on their 2nd drive and the Giants are forced to punt. After a fair catch interference call set Denver up near midfield, Siemian hit Emmanuel Sanders on a 33 yard pass that put them just outside the 20 yard line. Nothing happened for the offense after that but they are already in field goal range. Brandon McManus would miss the 35 yard attempt keeping it 3-0 Giants. Two short Orleans Darkwa runs brings the 1st quarter to an end with the home team trailing 3-0.
The 2nd period opens on a Giants 3rd & 5 and a false start moves them back 5 yards making it 3rd & 10, Manning would find Roger Lewis for 15 yards and a 1st down. A Darkwa trap play for 47 yards gets New York to the Broncos 13 yard line. An Eli Manning sprint out saw Engram get free on an out route for the Giants TD making the score 10-0. Denver’s next drive opens with two passes to Thomas in the first 3 plays. A pass interference on Janoris Jenkins puts Denver in Giants territory but Landon Collins picked off a Siemian pass putting a halt to the Broncos drive. The New York offense couldn’t get anything established and were forced to punt with 7:41 until halftime. The Broncos come out with good rhythm and get a few good plays, mostly To Demaryius Thomas. They got to the 10 yard line and decided not to run the ball. 3 miss fires and a promising drive ends with only 3.
The Giants following possession starts with a sack of Manning, a short Darkwa run then a incomplete pass and they punt it back to Denver. After a short CJ Anderson run we reach the two minute warning. Siemian throws an out to the flat late and Janoris Jenkins jumps the route, picks it off and takes it to the house to make it 17-3 with under a minute to go before halftime. In comes Brock Osweiler with just seconds left in the quarter as they look at Siemian’s shoulder on the sideline. Nothing comes of the late drive as this surprising first half ends with the winless Giants holding a 2 TD lead and set to receive the 2nd half kickoff.
To start the 2nd half, the Giants manage 1 first down then was forced to punt. Siemian starts the 2nd half for Denver but is unable to generate any offense on their opening drive. An Engram crossing route for big yardage set up another field goal by Aldrick Rosas to push the Giants lead to 17. A solid drive by the Broncos saw them work into Giants territory but after the drive stalled, Brandon McManus who missed a kick earlier had this attempt blocked from 53 yards out. More Manning to Engram set Rosas up for a 49 yard attempt but his kick was also blocked giving Denver the ball at their own 39 yard line. On an incomplete crossing route Landon Collins rolled up on Emmanuel Sanders right ankle as he went for the ball, Sanders stayed down and ended up being basically carried off the field straight to the cart and headed to the X-ray room. A short WR screen by Denver ends the 3rd.
The final quarter starts with a 4th & 2 and a Thomas catch gets he first down but Jenkins stripped him and the Giants recovered. With a 17 point lead the Giants look content with keeping the clock running and continuing to play defense as they go 3 & out. Denver has to get a move on if they want to come back and win this game. A long pass to Thomas takes him over 125 yards receiving but a Jason Pierre-Paul sack pushes the Broncos in the wrong direction. More clutch plays by a hobbled Thomas finds Denver at the 1 yard line on 4th & goal but the New York defense stonewalls Anderson at the goal line giving Manning the ball with 8:23 remaining in the game. A couple Orleans Darkwa runs get them out of the shadow of the goal post and a would be fumble is overturned by the officals but the Giants punt shortly after. Siemian moves his guys down the field quickly and finds Jeff Heuerman for a 13 yard TD, McManus’ kick makes it 20-10.
Denver tries an unsuccessful onside kick and New York takes the field with 4:06 remaining in this game. A few first downs and a Rosas field goal makes it 23-10 and puts this one away with 27 seconds left. A stout running game and the Giants defense made it tough for Denver the whole night. Against the leagues top run defense Darkwa was a hammer out there, he took the lanes given to him and made the most out of them. The Giants were a preseason Super Bowl pick and tonight In Denver they looked like it as they get off the snide with their first victory
