NEW YORK JETS vs BUFFALO BILLS
By: Robert L. Porter Jr.
In what seems like an annual Thursday night game, the Jets and Bills square off again at MetLife stadium. Tyrod Taylor, LeSean McCoy and the Bills are 5-2 and looking like a legitimate playoff team while Jets QB Josh McCown is #2 in completion percentage in the NFL but the team hasn’t been able to close out games and are 3-5 as a result.
The Jets get the first crack at it to Start this one and 1 run by each of their 3 headed running back group ends in a 4th & short and a quick punt. On Buffalo’s first play Taylor is sacked for a 12 yard loss putting them up against their own goal line, 2nd & 22 has you really behind the 8 ball and a punt usually follows and it did in this case as well. After the punt New York has great field possession near midfield. The Jets running game worked well on their 2nd drive as Matt Forte, Bill Powell and Josh McCown had good runs to move down the field. McCown would give them a 7-0 lead on a 10 yard TD run. The Bills 2nd drive saw a nice Shady McCoy run that took them into Jets territory but would end in a Buffalo punt. McCown suffered a 3 & out but was lucky to avoid an interception, he put a pass directly in the hands of a Bills defender that couldn’t handle it. The final drive of the quarter saw Taylor get his offense inside the red zone on 2 catches by rookie Zay Jones.
We open the 2nd quarter at the Jets 5 yard line and Tyrod finds a cutting Jones for the TD to tie us up at 7. Josh McCown and TE Austin Sefarian-Jenkins found their connection on the next drive. What looked to be a touchdown pass to ASJ was called back on an offensive pass Interference, they would have to settle for a Chandler Cantanzaro field Goal making it 10-7 Jets. After getting the kickoff, pressure On Taylor from the Jets front pushed Buffalo into a 3rd and long then a 4th down and a punt. A few nice Matt Forte plays had the Jets next drive looking promising but it would ultimately stall. The Bills get the ball looking for more points before the half, more Jets pressure and a sack pushes them back as we hit the 2 minute warning. Taylor is able to find a first down after 2nd & 24 but another Jets sack moves them back to the 50 yard line. A good pass looked to have them in field goal range but a fumble by Jordan Matthews gives the ball back to McCown with under a minutes b4 halftime. Nothing much happened and we head to the half with NY leading 10-7.
The 2nd half starts with another Bills 3 & out and they punt it to the Jets. Matt Forte and Jermaine Kearse starts the New York 2nd half with two 20 yard plays to take them into Bills territory then McCown hits Robby Anderson from 25 yards out for a TD making it 17-7 Jets. The New York defensive front has dominated this game thus far, pressuring Taylor and bottling up McCoy. Another Schmidt punt gives possession back to Josh McCown and his offense but nothing comes from the drive and they punt it back to Buffalo. A 51 yard Bilal Powell run set up an 11 yard TD run by Forte as New York makes it 24-7.
Buffalo starts their next drive with a few good pass plays by Tyrod Taylor but Nick O’Leary was stripped and lost the fumble. The Bills just can’t get out of their own way. Its the 2nd time Buffalo got into field goal range and gave it away on a fumble. The Jets have found something with their run game as they continue to control the clock and keep the Buffalo defense on their heels. As we head to the final quarter New York looks to hang on for the win unlike their last 3 contest.
The Jets run a few times then punts, then more pressure on Taylor ended in a fumble and a New York first and goal. Forte would punch it in from 4 yards out as its now become a rout, Buffalo trails 31-7. Desperate times for Buffalo has them going for a 4th & 3 on their own 32 yard line, they failed and set the Jets up in scoring range again. Another Cantanzaro kick makes it 34-7. Buffalo flies down the field and Taylor finds Deonte Thompson to make it 34-14. An onside kick recovery gives the Bills the ball back. After a pass interference Taylor finds Jordan Matthews down to the 1 yard line and the drive would be capped by a Taylor 1 yard plunge. The score is now 34-21. After an unsuccessful Buffalo onside kick the Jets try to run the clock out and improve to 4-5.
