BALTIMORE RAVENS vs HOUSTON TEXANS

By: Robert L. Porter Jr.

Week 12’s Monday night match up puts the Ravens up against the Texans. These are two teams that have very competitive defenses. Tom Savage and Joe Flacco should be under pressure all night. Lamar Miller will have to be the bell cow for Houston just as Baltimore will lean on their stable of backs as well.

1st QUARTER

the Ravens receive the opening kick of this one, went 3 & out rather quickly and punted the ball to Houston. Tom Savage comes out looking sharp as he and Ravens Penalties moves the Texans into the red zone. A pass Interference on Brandon Carr takes them down to the 4 yard line and Lamar Miller punches it in from there to take a 7-0 lead. Baltimore’s 2nd possession started with a Mike Wallace slant that took them into Texans territory but 2 back-to-back losses by Alex Collins moves them behind the 50. A 3rd down pass to Jeremy Maclin isn’t enough for a first down and they are forced to punt again. Miller starts the next Texans possession with an 18 yard run but two batted passes at the line of scrimmage brought an end to the drive as they punt it back to Flacco and his offense. Much like their first 2 possessions, Flacco and his team is unable to get anything established. Savage and his offense takes the field after a muffed punt gives them more excitement than they wanted on the fair catch. After Houston recovered the ball, they had a short Alfred Blue run then a Terrell Suggs sack of Tom Savage brings the first quarter to an end with Houston leading 7-0.

2nd QUARTER

To start the 2nd quarter the Ravens offensive drive stalls near midfield but a fake punt saw Sam Koch find Chris moore for 22 yards and a first down. 2 plays later Buck Allen runs it in for a game tying TD from 10 yards out. On the next Houston drive, Savage tries to fit a pass in between double coverage and is picked off by Tony Jefferson. The Raven offense comes on the field already in Texans territory. After 3 short plays, they call an outside flip to Alex Collins on 4th & 1 for 29 yards. Collins would punch it in on the next play from 8 yards out to make it 14-7. The middle of the Ravens  secondary looks a little soft as another Savage pass picks up a first down, this one was to Hopkins. Houston is at the Baltimore 5 yard line as we hit the 2 minute warning. They are unable to get into the end zone and have to settle for a Ka’imi’ Fairbairn 35 yard field goal making the score 14-10. Looking for more points, Flacco and his guys take the field. Some good passes get them in Justin Tucker range as he hits a 53 yard just before halftime, the Ravens lead 17-10 at the intermission.

3rd QUARTER

Houston opens the 2nd half with a 3 & out followed by a quick drive by Baltimore. The 3rd possession of the quarter and 2nd Houston possession was a 13 play drive that took 6:22 off the clock. The drive would end with another field goal From Fairbairn making the score 17-13. Flacco is unable to make anything happen on their next drive as they again are forced to punt the ball back to Houston without much movement. Savage doesn’t have any more success on his next possession as they go 3 & out and punt it with less than a minute and a half remaining in the 3rd quarter. A couple plays by Baltimore brings the quarter to a close as they will have a 3rd down when the final period begins.

4th QUARTER

The quarter starts with another Alex Collins run for a first down as he keeps the Ravens drive alive. Baltimore gets down inside of the 20 yard line on a nice pass from Flacco to a crossing Mike Wallace. This is the first drive they have sustained since the 2nd half began. This possession served 2 purposes for the Ravens as it got them in Justin Tucker field goal range to extend their lead to 7 and it also took just under 5 and a half minutes off the clock. Savage will get the ball back trailing 20-13. DeAndre Hopkins finds himself with 1-on-1 coverage with Jimmy Smith and he beats him for a 39 yard catch to put the Texans in scoring range. A miss fire by Savage to Lamar Miller forces them to settle for another field goal making the score 20-16. The Ravens next drive literally moved nowhere as they punt the ball back to Houston on 4th & 10. Savage and his offense looked to be driving for a score to take the lead but veteran pass Rusher Terrell Suggs strips him and the defense recovers it with under 5 minutes to play. After 2 Collins runs puts them in 3rd & 2, a Flacco hard count draws Jadeveon Clowney offsides to give them a first down and a chance to drain more clock and force Bill O’Brien to use his timeouts. Justin Tucker hits a 49 yarder to push the lead back to 7 points with 2:53 left to play. A good pass to C.J. Fiedorowicz starts the drive but Savage attempted to go back to that well on the next play and Anthony Levine intercepted the pass, putting the Ravens offense back on the field. A Flacco bootleg for 25 yards sets them up to kneel it out and get the victory.
