NFL Divisional Weekend: NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS vs TENNESSESS TITANS
NFL DIVISIONAL WEEKEND MATCH UP
#1 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS vs #5 TENNESSEE TITANS
(Saturday January 13th, 2018 8:15PM EST )
The 13-3 New England Patriots will host the Divisional Playoff Game this Saturday against The 10-7 Tennessee Titans.
If the past is any indication of things to come, The Tennessee Titans could be in for a long day, especially with Tom Brady leading the way. Tom Brady’s success against the Tennessee Titans has been nothing less that spectacular, shredding any defense put in his way. Since 2003 Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are a perfect 6-0 against Tennessee including a 2004 Playoff win. In those games Brady has thrown for a combined 1,662 yards (277 YPG), 13 TD’s with no interceptions. These are numbers that don’t bode well for Tennessee, especially with Tom Brady playing at such a high-level this year.
A lot of people aren’t giving The Tennessee Titans much of a chance against New England, especially having to travel up toFoxboro.
However, let’s not forget that the Titans just pulled off a 22-21 Victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium last week. A Game that saw the Titans down 21-3 in the first half, yet never gave up. A game that saw Marcus Mariota throw a touchdown pass to himself and Derrick Henry carry his team on his back while rushing for 156 yards on 23 carries (6.8 YPC) and a Touch Down.
Let’s compare the two teams. New Englands offense was ranked 3rd in the league averaging 394.2 YPG to Tennessee’s 314.0 YPG ranking them at 23rd. New England averages 28.6 PPG (3rd) to Tennessee’s 20.9 PPG (19th).
Defensively New England Ranks 6th (366.6 YPG) to Tennessee’s 13th ranked Defense (328.0 YPG). New England’s defense was terrible through the first 5 weeks. Matt Patricia was not having it and completely turned the defense around from week 6 on. New England finished with the 8th ranked defense only allowing 18.5 PPG to Tennessee’s 17th ranked allowing 22.3 PPG.
The New England Patriots will win this game. I believe it will be competitive early but the Patriots offense will prove to be too potent over 60 minutes and will eventually wear down the Tennessee Titans. As much as Derrick Henry is a monster and I believe he will have a big game. It will not be enough to keep up with the New England offense.
Tennessee Titans pass defense is ranked 25th averaging 239.3 yards a game. Tom Brady should have ample opportunity to shred the secondary as long as his O-Line can hold up. Tom Brady has endured a lot of punishment this year, getting hit, hurried and sacked more times this year than he has in his entire career. Tennessee had decent success getting to the quarterback this year, recording 43 sacks this year resulting in a loss of 272 yards. If Tennessee can penetrate the New England O-line, they have a strong chance of slowing down New England.
In the end New England has too much power on both sides of the ball and should pull of a hard fought but pretty easy win.
