By:Robert L. Porter Jr.
We are at the midway point of the fantasy football season and the playoffs are starting to take shape. Today we will take a look at a few players the undoubtedly has fantasy football owners looking forward to the postseason and hopefully winning a championship.
Melvin Gordon sat out of the London game with a bad hamstring but the other top flight fantasy Running backs were on full display. From the explosive Rams offense, Todd Gurley (30.60 PPR points) racked up 3 more TDs on a mere 19 touches. The 3 scores takes his total to 14. Not to be out done Kareem Hunt (37.10 PPR points) also put up 3 TDs for his juggernaut offense. Both players led their teams to huge wins ( Rams won by 29 and Chiefs won by 35). Another name that has to be put in this category is James White (29.70 PPR points). He does most of his damage as a pass catcher but with Sony Michel going down with a knee injury, his touches could actually increase.
Patrick Mahomes (42.82 PPR points) got back to his dominate ways as he threw for 358 passing yards and 4 TDs while adding 45 yards rushing in his teams beat down of the Bengals on sunday night football. Mitchell Trubisky (37.42 PPR points) passed for 333 yards and ran for 81 more. He totalled 3 TDs (2 passing, 1 rushing) but a hail mary as time expired was completed 1 yard short of the end zone as he was out dueled by Tom Brady (27.68 PPR points). Tight end Trey Burton (27.60 PPR points) was Tubisky’s top target as he had 9 catches for 126 yards and a TD.
On Thursday night the Denver Broncos took care of the Arizona Cardinals. The Broncos D/ST (32.00 PPR points) harassed and abused rookie Josh Rosen as they had 6 sacks, 3 ints, 2 Fumble recoveries and 2 touchdowns. Emmanuel Sanders (29.32 PPR points) continued his good play. He hauled in 6 passes for 102 yards and a TD, he even threw a 28 yard TD in this contest. Cam Newton (29.66 PPR points) and his Panthers trailed the Eagles 17 – 0 with 10:41 remaining in the game, he only had 8 fantasy points at that point. He went on to lead his team on a 21 – 0 tear to win the game. In that time period he tallied 21 fantasy points.
Marlon Mack (31.90 PPR points) had 159 total yards on 21 touches and 2 TDs to go with Andrew Luck’s (30.74 PPR points) 4 TDs on there way to a huge win over the Buffalo Bills. Other good performances this week include Ravens WR John Brown (26.40 PPR points), Philip Rivers (26.14 PPR points) and Rams D/ST (23.00 PPR points).
Monday night football saw 2 of the NFL’s elite wide outs face off. Odell Beckham Jr. (28.20 PPR points) and his New york Giants traveled to Atlanta to square off with Julio Jones (17.40 PPR points) and the Falcons. Beckham had the better fantasy day as a garbage time TD with :05 seconds remaining gave him nearly 30 points but Jones and his Falcons come out victories. Neither WR has been getting into the end zone much (Beckham has all 3 of his TDs in the last 3 weeks while Jones hasn’t scored yet this season).
WEEK 7 BREAKOUT CANDIDATES REVIEW
QB – Andy Dalton – 9.92 points
RB – Tarik Cohen – 22.30 points
WR – Jarvis Landry – 25.70 points
Our Breakout Candidates totalled 57.92 PPR points. Tarik Cohen had 14 touches for 83 total yards and 1 TD while Jarvis Landry had 10 receptions for 97 yards and a TD. These two guys did what we expected but Andy Dalton came up small in a huge game. He didn’t even hit 10 fantasy points against a beatable Chiefs pass defense. All 3 of our candidates lost but we’re playing fantasy football so that’s an irrelevant piece of information. We’re hoping for much bigger and better output in week 8.
WEEK 8 BREAKOUT CANDIDATES
QB – Baker Mayfield – @ Steelers
RB – Jalen Richard – vs Colts
WR – Geronimo Allison – @ Rams
Stop by next Thursday and see how our Breakout Candidates faired. We have put together some consistent weeks and we are looking to continue that trend.
